The Notting Hill Mystery begins in London, where the wife of the sinister Baron R__ dies after drinking from a bottle of acid, apparently while sleepwalking in her husband’s home laboratory. It looks like an accident, until insurance investigator Ralph Henderson learns that Baron R__ took out numerous life insurance policies on his wife. As Henderson investigates the case, he discovers not one, but three murders. Presented as Henderson’s evidential findings—diary entries, family letters, chemical analysis reports, interviews with witnesses, along with a crime scene map—the novel displays innovative techniques that would not become common features of detective fiction until the 1920s.

The Notting Hill Mystery Illustrated Once a Week edition by Charles Felix George du Maurier Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

This novel is one of the earliest detective novels written, having first been serialized in a weekly magazine. The narrative is presented through statements and documents collected by a private investigator acting on behalf of an insurance company. The question, posed almost immediately, is whether Baron R., a mesmerizer, caused the deaths of three people. Victorian and Edwardian detective fiction can be very often be a tiresome read. Not so with this novel; the narrative moves quickly, the dialogue is crisp, and I was soon engrossed by the tale. I could easily suspect Baron R. of foul play; my interest was maintained by wondering how his involvement could be brought home to him. This novel is as good as anything written 60 or 70 years later in the much-ballyhooed Golden Age.

great
This book is written through a series of testimonies given by parties present at the deaths of three people, a husband and his wife and the wife of the Baron, a mesmeriser. At stake is a double insurance policy. It was a slow, often tedious read. As I slogged to the end, with time to reflect upon the writing, I realized this is an incredible book, one that should be read by mystery writers today. Too many times I read a mystery only to be sadly disappointed by a quick resolution, bad and poor language or dialogue, no invested interest in the characters and a disjointed plot. This book had none of those complaints. It was a book where I became involved with the characters, suspected but didn't clearly know the perpetrator, felt the angst of the bystanders and caregivers, and was suspicious of the behaviors of several persons prior to knowing the reality of the crime. I would say this is one of the best mysteries ever written. I recommend this to fans of the genre.
Just as described.
I generally enjoy this type of mystery where the evidence is presented systematically, but this one seemed hard to follow for me. Also, there was no real engagement of the reader with the characters in the book. It was just a collection of facts and then you were left to decide for yourself in the end what the solution to the mystery might be.
this book is a compilation of serial novel sections published in a magazine in the 19th century. as such, the writing is a little ponderous for the modern reader, but the plot and character development are still entertaining. additionally, the format of the novel - presented as reports from an "assurance" investigator to his home office, is unusual and attention getting.
This is a strangely presented novel and I am struggling to work through it. The plot is interesting (delicate young woman perishes, husband is blamed) but the language (written in 1862) is more stilted than what I am used to. Much more stilted even than Dickens or Trollope or Austen. There is enough intrigue to tempt me forward to figure out what happened to this frail young woman, but the going is dense and at times meandering. Not sure I'll be able to finish.
I was intrigued to find something entitled "The First Detective Novel", and after reading this book, I think it is aptly named. Detective fiction has come a long way since the mid-1800's! Although the mystery is not officially solved, the reader definitely knows the solution (from early in the book). The presentation of facts is given in a straightfoward manner, but the plot is definitely lacking. I have given this a four star just because the facts are so well presented and because it, most likely, is the first attempt at writing a detective novel/mystery. It is actually more like a case-study and a report which accompanies the study, than a novel.
